Typing in Gujarati is easier than ever thanks to phonetic typing (also called transliteration). Instead of learning a special keyboard layout, you type words the way they sound in English and they automatically convert to Gujarati script. For example, type namaste and press space to get નમસ્તે.
Step 1 — Open the editor
Go to the GujaratiType editor. There is nothing to install — it runs in your browser on phone, tablet, or computer.
Step 2 — Type phonetically and press space
Type an English-sounding word and press the space bar. The word converts to Gujarati instantly. Keep typing — each word converts as you go. To type a number or English word in the middle of a sentence, press Ctrl+G to toggle English mode.
Step 3 — Choose the right spelling
After a word converts, a suggestion bar shows alternative spellings. Click one, or press the number key (1–8) next to it, to swap. This is handy for names and words with more than one common spelling.
Common letter mappings
Here are some everyday examples of how English spellings map to Gujarati:
| Type this | You get |
|---|---|
kam | કમ |
khel | ખેલ |
gam | ગમ |
chal | ચલ |
jay | જય |
Tamatar | ટમાટર |
tu | તુ |
din | દિન |
naam | નામ |
pani | પાણી |
phal | ફળ |
bal | બલ |

Tips for accuracy
- Use double letters for long vowels: “aa”, “ee”, “oo”.
- Use capital letters for hard/retroflex sounds: “T”, “D”, “N”.
- Use the on-screen keyboard for rare symbols like ૐ and ₹.
